Summary


I think it worth noting that my own contemplations on blankness, form and the life of an artist were in tandem with an exciting zeitgeist. The Dia Foundation was formed in 1974, recognizing exciting, new contemporary art and shattering old concepts of art stewardship. It was the year that people everywhere began considering Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The famous German artist Joseph Beuys first visited the United States and, although we were not formally introduced, I, too, enjoyed projects involving lard and honey. To this day I feel a bond. Patti Smith released her first single, "Hey Joe." Clearly, I was part of something big. My marker pens and I were on the cusp of an evolutionary trigger; the world would never be the same.
