The increasing use of facsimile transmission equipment over the last seventeen years has set the stage for the current explosion of facsimile use. In recent years the need for compatibility between various manufacturers' facsimile equipment led to the establishment of standards by the CCITT. In late 1980 this organization announced its Group 3 Recommendation for facsimile, which led to the introduction of new digital facsimile machines by numerous companies. These machines provide increased performance and efficiency through features such as message assurance and diagnostics capabilities, auto receive, automatic paper cutters, high-speed transmission of documents, and digital modems which can adjust transmission speed according to the line quality of the direct distance dialing networks. According to Webster, the word facsimile means the transmission and reproduction of graphic matter, an exact copy, by wire or radio. While the description is accurate, it falls far short of describing some of the percentions that exists about the word "facsimile."
