"What's nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" That's the question that always comes to mind on the not infrequent occasions on which I am asked, "How did you ever get interested and involved in prison reform?

Americans are a generous and sympathetic people for the most part. They give millions to disaster victims all over the world because disaster victims must necessarily be "good" people. Or may be it doesn't matter if they are bad or good as long as they are hit by an Act of God like a hurricane or earthquake.

I met a very intelligent woman recently who asked me that question: "How did you become interested and involved in prison reform?" I replied that I had been a close friend of [George Jackson]. To this she responded, "Of the Jackson Five?"
