Summary


IN THE LATEST MALAYSIAN Quality of Life Index (MQLI) report, public safety was identified as an area which did not record any improvement. In fact, it reported that crime rate per thousand of population had increased from 3.8 per thousand people in 1990 to 6.2 per thousand in 2002.

In this light, the Malaysian government has stepped up its efforts to introduce crime prevention initiatives, having recently allocated RM6 billion to the Royal Malaysian Police in 2008 for infrastructure ramp up, in addition to deploying CCTVs in crime- prone areas in the city. Furthermore, the government also announced plans to upgrade police information communications technology (ICT) and technical aids to help maintain law and order in the nation.
