The story goes that Emily Graves Williston had a houseguest from Europe sometime in the early 1800s.
She noticed the buttons on his waistcoat were covered in bright fabric, and when evening fell, she crept into his room, snipped one of the buttons from the vest, and took it apart to see how it was made.
