When Earlington, Ky., native Lee Todd accepted the position of president of the University of Kentucky in 2001, he pledged to make the institution more meaningful in the day-to-day lives of Kentuckians.

Among Todd's goals were using the university to address what he termed the "Kentucky Uglies," conditions that hold the state back from reaching its potential. The "Uglies" included the state's high rates of lung and cervical cancer, cardiovascular disease, oral health problems and obesity, in addition to lagging in per-capita income and education levels.
