Summary
Of course, that's just scratching the surface of this dysfunctional-family comedy from first-time feature director Mike Mills, who also wrote the screen adaptation of the novel by Walter Kirn. [Justin Cobb]'s dad Mike (Law & Order: Criminal Intent's Vincent D'Onofrio) is a frustrated ex-jock now working at a sporting-goods store. His mom Audrey (The Deep End's Tilda Swinton) is a nurse who harbors a crush on a TV actor (Benjamin Bratt) and even conspires to enter a win-a-date contest sponsored by a cereal company. ("It's just a little, silly, ridiculous fun," she babbles to Justin, who calls his parents by their first names.) Life sucks for his wiseacre kid brother Joel (Chase Offerle), too: "You think maybe you're so bust being weird that I have to step up to be normal?" he asks Justin.
