Walt Knorpp knows what it means to beat the bottom of the ladder. Knorpp's first job at the Donley County State Bank of Clarendon had little to do with deposit slips, canceled checks or posting machines. Instead, as a sophomore student at Clarendon High School in 1956, the first days of his long career at the bank were largely spent with a ladder, a mop and a broom. The history of the Donley County State Bank of Clarendon is closely tied to the history of the Knorpp family. The bank's biggest business is in agriculture and ranching, so Knorpp translated that into the insurance business and began to offer equine mortality coverage: in short, horse insurance. After Knorpp got involved in the business of horse insurance, it was a natural next step that he became involved in the business of horses themselves.
