According to the American Diabetes Association, 20.8 million people in the U.S. have diabetes-including a whopping 6.2 million who don't even know it yet. Although diabetes is likely to be underreported, it was still the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2002, and today increases the overall risk of death by twice as much as that for people without diabetes.
