Beginning January 1, the 39-million-member AARP will expand its individual health insurance offerings to Americans 50 years and older through two of the largest health insurers in the US. The twin seven-year partnerships, with Aetna Inc and UnitedHealth Group, are part of a broader initiative AARP refers to as Divided We Fail. Development of Aetna's AARP health plans is going well and will be launched in 30 states on January 1, said Laurie Brubaker, SVP, individual markets, Aetna. The insurer will also roll out the Personal Health Record to AARP members. It enables an individual to have an electronic health-care record, including medical conditions and medications, that is updated in real time through Aetna's claims system. UnitedHealth's agreement extends and broadens the relationship involving AARP-branded Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D and Medicare Supplement products through 2014. This past August, the plan offered to cover dependents of members.
