Kid Pro Quo

As a parent of two, I will admit my initial reaction to the interviewees in Ann M. Bauer's "secondhand Kids" (Talk, March) was predictably unsympathetic. In the interest of fairness, I tried to remember what life was like before I had kids, or what my perceptions of other children have been when my kids "stayed home with a sitter" (a suggestion your interviewee Jane helpfully emphasized so parents could fully benefit from her wisdom; if I have ever inconvenienced her by not being able to find a sitter, consider me suitably mortified).
