It is a rare event that is not celebrated when it reaches a golden anniversary, nd the fiftieth year after the birth of the United Nations is no exception. Its very survival deserves recognition whatever its shortcomings, past and present. Its predecessor, the League of Nations, lasted less than half as long. But a comparison between ceremonies commemorating the end of World War II and those celebrating the beginnings of the organization designed to prevent World War III suggests that the UN is an embarrassment, hardly worthy of serious attention by the American public. The books under review reflect this sentiment, as they either rail at the sins of American domination or try to night the wrongs inflicted on or by the UN. Ironically, the most satisfying of the books is a pictorial history of the first ten years of the ill-fated League of Nations.
