What made baseball so intriguing was a six-week paid vacation in spring training in Florida during the biting New York winters and the expense-account trips to San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles or Anaheim during the season. In the end, what made it for him as a sportswriter was the never-ending thrill of a byline over a story everybody would read.
