Chinese economic plans that may affect foreign businesses in Hong Kong

Foreign companies doing business in Chinese Hong Kong should be familiar with China's economic policies that may affect them. These include the rapid development of Chinese provinces surrounding the former British colony, which seems to indicate Beijing's commitment to erasing the boundaries between it and the mainland. Other significant developments are the government's decision to shift new investments away from overheated economic areas and to limit foreign participation in the stock market. Foreign firms should also be aware that they need to be strategically attractive to China if they are to obtain assistance from government officials. Those with current leases of only up to 50 years are also likely to be given favorable renewal terms if they prove to be good corporate citizens.
