Summary
Terrence McNally's play about the life of Jesus as the gay man of sorrows resulted in much resistance from religious organizations. The Manhattan Theater Club, which scheduled the play for spring 1998 cancelled it, but had to reschedule it because of a counterprotest by the arts community. Although the controversy generated much enthusiasm, the play itself left the audience unimpressed.
