In short, if you're one ofthe millions of homeowners who can't figure out how to program your television, VCR or DVD, don't even think of tackling a more complex project.

A major stumbling block in the past was always the problem of how to hide all the numerous wiring devices necessary to connect the various components. Beware the cheap versions of a "Home Theater in a Box" that combine a DVD player, a surround-sound receiver, five small speakers and a subwoofer, all in one carton for a suspiciously low price of $199 to $399. According to some professional reviewers, these systems aren't worth the money; it would be better to simply hook up a standard DVD player to your high-end stereo or to the audioinput plugs of your television.

"It doesn't look like a showroom," he says. "It looks like a lounge. We're not Best Buy, we're not selling TVs or pushing products."
