Forty Texas bankers, guests and several TBA staff members roamed DC Mar 27 to Mar 29 in search of regulatory relief and a level playing field with credit unions. OCC senior staff members discussed the recently proposed Interagency Guidance on Concentrations in Commercial Real Estate. Texas bankers expressed doubts about the need for the guidelines saying that they could adversely affect many healthy community banks. Since the meeting, TBA has joined other state associations and the ABA in opposing the commercial real estate guidance proposal. TBA continues to advocate a "Contain and Convert" strategy: contain credit unions from unbridled expansion and convert those that are acting like commercial banks.
