This is the fifth in the series of columns on getting prepared for your own or for your parents' aging. Previous columns have covered legal documents you should complete and the kinds of information you should have readily available in an emergency. As involved as those things may seem, the really hard part is talking about the decisions that need to be made.

Relationships between parents and their children are among the most important relationships we have, but they are also emotionally charged and volatile. When we add the difficult and emotional nature of late-life decisions, it can be a big challenge to discuss such things as long-term care, living wills and health care.
