On Wednesday, the U.N. undersecretary-general for political affairs, Ibrahim Gambari, said he expected the Security Council to extend the investigation past its December deadline "with or without Mehlis."

They set up a simple tent on the pavement decorated with plain panels on which visitors noted impressions, mostly ironic: "Syria is not responsible that Cain killed Abel," "Syria is not responsible for the earthquake in Pakistan."

"What we care about is the sovereignty of the nation and its honor," [Rateb Shallah] told UPI. "We want the United Nations to act according to its main objectives and stop exposing nations and peoples to injustices and sufferings... It should be in principle against the isolation and besieging of nations," he said.

Syria Wants U.N. Report Changed

DAMASCUS - First, the major witness causing Syria to be implicated by the United Nations in the killing last spring of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri recanted his testimony at a publicly broadcast news conference.
