Superintendent Notes Sound Condition of Iowa Banks

Tom Gronstal, superintendent of banks for Iowa, told bankers April 28, 2005, that things in the industry are scarily good. Recently reappointed to a second term as Iowa's top state bank regulator, Gronstal said nine banks in the state have a 3 CAMELS rating, while all the remaining 349 banks have ratings of either 1 or 2. Speaking to bankers in West Des Moines for the annual Day with the Superintendent, Gronstal said conditions in the industry are sound. Loan quality is good, with classified assets equaling 16% of capital.
