Everyone, it seems, has a varying opinion on whether or not the U.S. can maintain its superpower status on the global economic stage. Some say that U.S. dominance is a given. Others say that China, India and the European Union (EU) will diminish Uncle Sam's stature, already teetering somewhat after its controversial invasion of Iraq in March, 2003. The quality of the jobs the U.S. is exporting is hurting the domestic economy and dampening consumer confidence. Uncle Sam's understandable preoccupation with terrorism is also hampering government efforts to hammer out satisfactory trade agreements and focus on jobs and growth. Despite some speed bumps along the way, there is little doubt that the U.S. can regain its seat at the head of the table.

When it comes to the economy and economists, Harry Truman had it right. The former President would often quip that he was forever looking for a one-armed economist. Specifically, one who could never say, "On the one hand this, but on the other hand that."

If Truman were alive today, and wanted an opinion on U.S. prospects in a global economy, he wouldn't find many one-armed economists.
