A new study of wealthy donors by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and sponsored by Bank of America offers a treasure trove of philanthropic information. "Portraits of Donors" identifies 12 types of donors in high net-worth households, defined as having a net worth of more than $1 million or an income of more than $200,000 a year. According to nonprofit experts, tracking why and how the rich give is illuminating because the wealthy are philanthropic trendsetters. These observers also anticipate a considerable transfer of wealth as the retirement of baby boomers begins to occur.
