Summary
[Jennifer Reimer]'s brash [Joy] holds her own with him, asking, "Are you being offensive or merely stupid?" Warnie Lewis (Alex Ross) is well named, since he is constantly warning Lewis that their bachelor establishment is being threatened by this woman. "Americans don't understand about inhibitions," he tells his brother. Hugh Campion, Oak Dowling and Joel Roth also have their reservations; each is afraid of allowing even the word love into their abstract literary conversations.
Reimer and [Chuck Isen] are well cast as [William Nicholson]'s unlikely lovers. She is impulsive and. commits to Lewis through his writings. He has a harder time with the "c" word. Only shortly before she dies, does he, stuttering, tell her, "I haven't had time to...say...things"; and her tart reply is pure Joy: "It doesn't take long." Isen is a perfect match for C.S. Lewis, known in America for The Chronicles ofNarnia. Serious and thoughtful, his pulpit manner is impeccable; we almost believe him when he tells us that suffering is God's way of waking us up to happiness. As his suffering becomes personal and his character discovers that "there are other worlds, this one is but a shadow," we really believe the human despair that Isen brings to the writer.See the full content of this document
