Spotlight On Southern New Jersey

While some foresee a slight slowdown, many business leaders and planners report strong growth for the South Jersey region, which encompasses Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem counties. Atlantic City in particular, with its casinos and other growing businesses, is spurring growth in surrounding areas.

Take Vineland for instance.

"We are going at 100 miles an hour. I have never seen it so busy in my entire business-development - career," says James Lelli, director of economic development for the City of Vineland. "It's just great."

Three to four new companies, which should be settled by the end of 2006, will add "another 500 jobs, easy,he says. This includes a $6-million, 54,000 squarefoot Harley-Davidson Supercenter. A Central Tractor Supply will add another 40,000 square feet at a shopping center near the Cumberland Mall.

The 1.2 million square-foot mall - featuring establishments such as Lowe's, Acme, Home Depot, Marshall's, BJ's, a 14-screen theater, Boscov's Department Store, J.C. Penney's and Bed, Bath & Beyond - is "almost a destination mall for shoppers now," Lelli says. Meanwhile, Target and Kohl's are expected to open in the fall as anchors for a new, 600,000 square-foot mall. And a new 160,000 squarefoot Wal-Mart Supercenter will add 300 more employees.

At Vineland Industrial Park South, Davy Cold Storage is adding a 50,000 square-foot freezer. Omni Baking is adding two production lines and hiring another 120 employees. Briclor, a Canadian company that...
