The First National Bank, Dalhart's only home-owned bank, has been making customers feel welcome since 1903, when it was founded. Locally owned and controlled, First National Bank has $45 million in assets and 20 employees. The very competitive banking environment, coupled with the cyclical nature of agriculture, has brought about some challenges for the bank, which specializes in ag lending. The high price of fuel and fertilizer, plus the unpredictability of the weather, make profitability very slim in agriculture, president and CEO Jack Vanderburg states. Vanderburg has just completed his second three-year term on the TBA Board of Directors, an experience that helped him make some new contacts and invaluable acquaintances.
