Marin Women's Study researchers plan to examine relationships between the survey answers and women's breast density and other factors visible on mammograms. Researchers also will try to uncover the etiology of breast cancer in the saliva samples, which are being stored at the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato.
[Rochelle Ereman] is continually looking for other new studies that might shed light on the causes of breast cancer and offer a new hypothesis. "That's one of the benefits of the bknepository," she says. "We're able to collect the saliva, and as the research evolves in these next couple of years, it will point the direction into research to conduct."The more saliva the Marin Women's Study gets, the more reliable the studies will be. "How high our response rate is will determine whether the scientific community believes [Marin]'s results," Ereman says. "It's very important to get a representative sample of Marin.
