Summary


It's loud, it's long and it's devouring your local multiplex. Spider-Man 3 arrived last weekend, spinning the latest Everyman-as-Superhero installment for record-breaker crowds.

The landlord won't fix the front door. A slick rival with kick-ass cameras [a bottle-blonde Topher Grace] moves in on his photo gig. MJ thinks he's a clueless clod who can't feel her pain. Best "frenemy" Harry (James Franco) wants both his girl and his corpse. What's a superhero to do?

Played by an imposingly buff Thomas Haden Church, Sandman provides the most digital thrills and the movie's moral metaphor. In the usual government experiment gone wrong, the escaped con Marco has been blasted into particles of sand. Amazing digital effects pepper this movie, but watching Sandman come together for the first time steals the breath. This character's painful attempt to reassemble himself as he stands, walks, breaks apart, and tries again recalls [Peter Parker]'s endless struggle to balance ordinary life with extraordinary power and responsibility It is also [Sam Raimi]'s nod to horror classic "Frankenstein."
