But medical malpractice insurance rates "are stabilizing in the state, although they are still intolerably high," says Downs. A few years ago "it was hard to get insurance at all."

Checks totaling $16.4 million went out last week to nearly 1,200 neurosurgeons, obstetricians and radiologists to help offset their medical malpractice insurance costs, according to the state's Department of Banking and Insurance.
