While visualizing this ideal system, trying to imagine how it might come about, I had an epiphany, an idea that would make RFID-based systems both more robust and less expensive. The translation software that carries information from the tag to the library automation system, known as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), had been a key obstacle to designing an efficient RFID system.

Schaper offers ways on how to improve circulation work processes that might just change the current paradigm for how radio frequency identification (RFID) and self-check products are created and sold in the library marketplace. Among others, he also discusses several repetitive work processes for radical rethinking prior to the 2004 opening of the new library.

We certainly didn't set out to create a whole new RFID framework that would be applicable to other libraries around the country, but we may have done just that-"accidentally on purpose." By facing down a series of challenges and applying a healthy dose of common sense, we found a way to improve circulation work processes that might just change the current paradigm for how RFID and self-check products are created and sold in the library marketplace.

How did we get here? By walking a very fine line, the familiar one between a tight budget and a goal of delivering excellent service.
