Some perspectives on Montana's economy.
On November 10, Governor-elect Marc Racicot met with Bureau director Paul Polzin and editorial coordinator Marlene Nesary to discuss state-level economic issues. Though shortened somewhat because of space limitations, the following addresses all the major points of the interview.
MBQ: What will be your first priority on taking office in January? Racicot: The first priority is making certain we create jobs. Everybody in the food chain is dependent on it. We need jobs to provide a consistent source of revenue for needed and necessary services. How do you go about that? The first step ... has to be spending reform. And I'm not talking about some mindless scheme that's designed to simply pander to the public, or bash government. I'm talking about a value-oriented process where we look at governmental delivery systems and make certain they're providing a dollar's worth of service for every dollar invested. Secondly, against the backdrop of a responsible government, we have to get on with tax reform. We want to equalize the tax burden in the state and make certain we don't any longer drive away entrepreneurial possibilities--most notably, in the area of personal property taxation and income taxation.
