Summary


Swirling purples, greens and blacks cover the walls. Brightly colored beakers, flasks and test tubes adorn the work bench. Gizmos and gadgets, Superballs and slime, a cotton candy maker and a "hover board" sit waiting on tables and floors.

It's just a typical day at Mad Science of Evansville, one of a couple of dozen places that will offer summer camps, programs, workshops and experiences for children this summer.

Summer Solutions Special Classes Stir Up Interest in Science

Owner Jill Howery said summer will be an experimentally great time with programs in everything from earth sciences to space.

"Having a background in the sciences certainly helps," said "Jupiter Jill" Howery, who is a physical therapist. "Having that knowledge and that interest helps me connect with the kids."

While learning certainly is a goal for Mad Science -- and the eight Mad Scientists with other-worldly names who work for Howery -- the summer camps are not tedious lessons in science.

"We want the kids to have a good time, to do a lot of hands-on work, to think about how things work -- and why," she said.

Other than the weeks of Memorial Day and Independence Day, camps are three hours a day for five days. The other two weeks, four-day camps are offered.

"We'll do something different each day," she said. "We like to have something for the kids to take home with them, something to show their pare...
