Slap Schtick

Summary

Bengt (pronounced bent) [Bengt Washburn] took an unorthodox path that prepared him for the trails and tribulations of being a stand-up comedian. "I was a Mormon missionary for two years," Washburn says, "so I can handle the rejection."

While Washburn's material is very funny, his bits lose something when pared down to a single joke. One of his most popular routines describes how going on a canoeing trip can be romantic as a single while causing incredible tension for married couples. "If you are married, you understand the impulse to kill," he says at one point. "But you don't kill, and that's love."

Following his show at the OP Factory, Washburn is joining the Pretentious Comics Association, a group of fellow comedians, for what they are calling The Over the Head Comedy Tour. "It's just jokes that are ridiculously based in science, philosophy or religion," he says. "It's not going to be short attention span stuff."
