From Sixth Street to Sistrunk Boulevard: After 60 Years, Burrows Electric Still Illuminating Broward's Black Community

A great deal has changed along the Sistrunk corridor since 1948, when George Burrows, Sr. borrowed $500 from a local business owner to open Burrow's Electric. Although many businesses have come and gone in the predominantly Black Fort Lauderdale neighborhood where Burrows grew up, Broward County's first Black electrical company still operates from its original location at 1552 N.W. Sixth Street.

Bob Young, president of Affordable Builders, has worked with Burrows on many construction projects. Young's company is in the process of working on a redevelopment project at Burrow's Electric, as part of the City of Fort Lauderdale's Community Redevelopment Act project (CRA). He refers to Burrows as the consummate professional."

Burrows offered this advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: "Number one, you've got to get an education; you can't accomplish anything these days without one. The fields are so open and opportunities are great. Now, one can do anything they want, in the field they choose."
