Summary


Alas, the Melon House isn't the name of a new strip club or house of ill repute. Rather, it's one of the lovely glass-enclosed rooms at the new Estate Fruit House at Longwood Gardens, the spectacular horticultural center in the Brandywine River Valley. Longwood was the country estate of Pierre du Pont, ardent gardener, horticulturist and early-20th-century industrialist who grew hothouse fruit year-round so he could enjoy pineapples, oranges and nectarines whenever his mind-numbingly wealthy heart desired. Nectarines in winter don't seem so remarkable in 2004, when you can pop over to the grocer and pick up pretty much any fruit you like any time of the year, but back in the beginning of the 20th century this was quite special.
