Ship Off the Old Block; Freedom's First Production in Nearly a Year and a Half Marks a Magnificent Return.

Summary

During its initial run at La MaMa in New York City, Daniel Beaty's Emergence-See! collected a host of impressive reviews. Yet instead of simply presenting the show's original version at Freedom Theatre, Beaty chose to put his solo play in the hands of Freedom Repertory artistic director Walter Dallas. What emerges is an entertaining, poignant, profound and massively theatrical production about how we can either ignore history or connect the past to our present and future.

Beaty himself is the 2004 Grand Slam Champion at the prestigious Nuyorican Poet's Cafe, and he makes fine use of his talents not only as a poet, but as a singer as well. He shows a chameleonlike ability to play a wide range of characters including [Rodney]'s gay brother Freddy, whose poem "Coming Out" is a touching tale of a man seeking love.
