Summary
While [James Mercer] was writing The Shins' new record, Wincing the Night Away, he was battling insomnia and feeling haggard-and the title of the new album reflects that. After the release of Chutes Too Narrow in 2003, Mercer's life changed dramatically. He moved from Albuquerque to Portland (unknowingly into Elliot Smith's old house), his love relationship dissolved and then his band hit the big time, staying on the road for nearly two years. When the tour finally ended, Mercer found it hard to slow down and relax.
