If one barometer of a performer's hipness is the number of times they've been remixed, then Suzanne Vega stands atop the heap. Her signature classic "Tom's Diner," once considered that rare paradox--an intelligent novelty hit--has been recalibrated, retouched and generally fiddled with over 30 times, by the likes of Destiny's Child, Lil' Kim, Tupac and, most recently, Danger Mouse. And while there's no greater sign of relevance than the altering hands of a hip-hop producer, Vega's odd little songs have made her a star at arm's length--a hit song about child abuse? Who else could pull that off? Only Vega, whose embracing of the quirks and quandaries of existence is matched only by her ability to write a damn good song about it.
