Set List 2008

Summary

It was a tough year. But 2008 produced a lot of great tunes, including Radiohead's enchanting In Rainbows; the Black Keys' surprise Attack & Release; the alluring mash-up of Girl Talk's Feed the Animals; the relaxed retro pop of the Last Shadow Puppet's The Age of the Understatement; Vampire Weekend's eponymous hit; MGMT's beat-heavy breakthrough Oracular Spectacular, and stunning CDs from jazz vets Hank Crawford, David "Fathead" Newman, Jimmy Cobb and Donald Bailey. Here are 10 more notable discs, some reviewed in these pages during the year and a few that slipped under the radar:

Standing on the shoulders of the veteran Kronos Quartet, this eclectic avantchamber ensemble is taking the string quartet to new heights. [Brooklyn Rider] has toured and recorded extensively with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and Passport is rife with world-music influences, from Armenian folk songs to a cover of rock-en-español titans Café Tacuba's catchy "La Muerte Chiquita."

The British singer and songwriter has been dubbed the closest thing alternative rock has to [Bob Dylan]. This former member of the Soft Boys is a neo-psych patron saint, dark and witty. Shadow Cat arrives as a strong col- lection of unreleased material from the '90s, including demos, an acoustic version of Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary" and "High on Yourself," a dreamy Syd Barrett-like ballad.
