Health care professionals, senior citizen advocates, civic and community leaders all continue to preach that preventive health care, exercise and remaining physically fit will help to improve quality of life and improve the likelihood that many of the baby boomers can remain at home and save billions in costs associated with longer term care, hospitalization, assisted living and other forms of institutionalized care for Alzheimer's and dementia. According to a 2005 study compiled by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Center for Health Statistics, the number of people in New Jersey age 60 and over grew 3.5 percent between 1990 and 2000 to 1,443,782.
