Summary

Well shot and edited, The Devil and [Daniel Johnston] takes the form of many other documentaries, combining old footage and photos together with interviews with people from Daniel's life. The most unusual one is filmed with the interviewee (Gibby Haines, of the group Butthole Surfers) in a dentist's chair having his teeth filled. Also interviewed are Daniel's parents and siblings, his best friend David Thornberry and, more tellingly, his former agent, Jeff Tartakov, who seems as obsessed with Daniel, his work and his career as Daniel is himself.

We don't meet any of Daniel's famous admirers, such as David Bowie, Johnny Depp, Matt Groening and the late Kurt Cobain, who wore a Daniel Johnston-designed T-shirt to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. And we don't meet anyone who has a critical assessment of Daniel's work. I for one found it so unappealing that I had a hard time observing my own rule of never walking out on a movie I'm reviewing.
