While the ChoicePoint data theft in 2005 and the loss of a Department of Veterans Affairs laptop in 2006 may have been watershed incidents that helped bring data breaches into the public eye, similar episodes are now being reported at the astounding rate of approximately one per day. Chances are you know someone who has been affected by a data breach. Because of this, people are demanding better security from the companies with which they do business.
Organizations should subject their information security programs to independent third-party reviews in order to ensure that security measures are efficient, cost-effective and capable of mitigating anticipated threats. Thirdparty reviewers can help test the effectiveness of established security measures, identify additional threats, and recommend strategies and solutions for improving the information security program.
