Summary

Aer Lingus' global network has recently been upgraded from analog to a combination of analog and 64K-bps digital data circuits. The network, leased from MCI Communications Corp, allows the airline to maintain flexibility through its high speed, and reliability through tandem cable links between the major hubs. The fiber cables take separate geographic routes as well, so if one becomes disabled, the other can handle the extra traffic temporarily. Reliability is important to Aer Lingus' customers as well, as the carrier handles reservations and cargo communications for many other airlines. The network extends from the airline's headquarters in Dublin, Ireland to operating centers in New York, London and other cities worldwide. The network supports some 11,000 employees throughout the UK, Europe and North America, and also supports e-mail, cellular radio, packet switching and telex.
