VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Richard Clayton Ankeney, 78, of the 1300 block of Willowood Lane, peacefully went to sleep Nov. 25, 2010 after a short three-month battle with cancer.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio and had 15 brothers and sisters. He joined the Marine Corps at 17 years old, served his country for 31 years, and retired in 1980 as a master gunnery sergeant. He then decided to go back to school where he received an assoc- iate's degree from TCC and two bachelor's degrees from Norfolk State University, one of which was in social work.
