Summary
Generally, at the inception of any loan, great care is taken to evaluate and assess the collateral. Lenders dispatch appraisers and undertake rigorous field examinations. Borrowing bases are delicately constructed. For asset-based lenders, understanding where their borrowers stand is only half the equation. When team members are playing new positions or dealing with clients with whom they are unfamiliar, managers need processes in place and access to a "deep bench" to avoid being caught off guard during any stage in the life of a loan. In sports, as in asset-based lending, the 80/20 rule applies: 80% of your team will likely perform without difficulty, but it is the other 20% that poses the greatest risk and requires the greatest level of understanding, insight and scrutiny.
