Summary


Before he was the golf-playing, pipe-puffing commander-in-chief, Gerald Ford was a Michigan congressman for 26 years -- an athletic guy from Grand Rapids who went to public schools, turned down an offer to play in the NFL so he could go to law school and volunteered for the Navy during World War II.

Bruce Geelhoed, now a professor and history department chairman at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., grew up in Grand Rapids during the 1950s and '60s when Ford was the local congressman and also the House minority leader. Geelhoed remembers Ford well.
