"Reasons to be careful ..." that was the theme of this year's Institute of Credit Management conference held on Mar 15 at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon. Dennis Turner is the Chief Economist of HSBC Bank. He advises on economic trends at a national level and within specific industries and regions. Low inflation leads to low base rates, which lead to favorable exchange rates, which result in a competitive economy. The Government is not managing the economy. The growth rate in other EU countries slowed, but not in the UK. Unemployment in the UK became historically low, and has remained so. Of more direct interest to the credit manager is GDP. Since 1996 it has grown by 3%, mostly by courtesy of the consumer. The packed exhibition, which was held in the hall adjacent to the conference, featured 25 exhibitors, whose profiles appear overleaf, and who offer services across the credit industry, covering all aspects of the trade and consumer arenas.
