It's always a joy to interview Walt Raymond. Though he was winemaker for a long time, he's really a farmer at heart, and as such, he's a mightily straightforward, no tricks sort of guy. I begin our recent interview by asking Walt Raymond what's new. He hems and haws, tugs at a forelock, scuffs a foot and finally says, "Nothing's new. It's just the same. We're good guys."

All you have to do is taste through the current Raymond wines to know what Walt and Roy have carried forward of their family's storied heritage. Key to that heritage is a collection of wines that are appropriately proportioned. "We've never even considered picking grapes at ultra high sugars or trying to make blockbuster wines," says Walt. "You can't drink those wines. They may score well in competitions, and you may be able to force down a glass, but they don't do much for a meal."
