This was finally the year to take my daughter to her first game. She learned a little bit about baseball, a little bit about merchandising, and a whole lot about why Cubs fans are "fucking assholes." That's not me saying Cubs fans are "fucking assholes" (although the two in front of us who wouldn't sit down are); it's our fellow Pirates fans who feel that it is more important to defend our team's "honor" than to act in a decent manner around 6-year-olds.

When Dad used to take us to Memorial Stadium in Baltimore to see our beloved Orioles, he forbade booing. Even at the Yankees. Even at Reggie Jackson. He always stressed that rooting for your team and booing the other team are not the same thing. They are diametrically opposed. One is positive, one is negative. The two don't mix. "We didn't come all the way down here to be negative, we came to have fun and root our team on," he would say. "You don't boo a good play, even if it's made by the other team. Good baseball is good baseball, and you have to respect that."
