Rant! #227; Show Some Respect for Funeral Processions, People

Summary

I AM NOT an obedient city-walker. I really don't have any qualms crossing a street outside the legal bounds of the crosswalk. If traffic isn't an issue, I never wait for the light to turn green. When the orange hand's a-blinkin', off the curb I start a-steppin'. Drivers may recognize me as one of the preoccupied Pitt students bounding across Bigelow between cars while thinking to myself, "You can't hit me. I'm a pedestrian!"

What's more appalling to me is that this isn't the first time I've witnessed such ignorance. A couple months ago I watched a batch of determined walkers (presumably Pitt students) bring a funeral procession to a halt in the middle of [Bigelow]. Last March I stood on the corner of Atwood and Forbes as a mile's length of fire trucks made its way down Forbes in a procession honoring two recently fallen firefighters. A few people around me mourned silently. Others took pictures of the impressive display. But most just waited, respected and didn't mind being a little late.
