The Friday following this interview, AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc, announced plans to begin service to Burlington. Starting May 21, the low-fare carrier will offer three daily nonstop fights between Burlington International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshal/Airport. When the airlines cut staff in response to bankruptcy proceedings and so on, and were in negotiations with their flight crews and are looking to cut in other places, a lot of the customer service folks didn't continue.

Q&Amp;A: Brian Searles and the Bia

Brian Searles, 60, has been the Director of Aviation at the Burlington (VT) International Airport since 2005.

He moved to Vermont as a child in 1952 from the Schenectady, NY, area. His father was in the early television industry, selling and servicing televisions, radios and Geiger counters in the area. He was schooled in the Burlington area, attended Champlain College and holds an MSA degree from St Michael's College.

Searles completed a career in policing in 1994 which extended over 26 years and included five years as police chief in South Burlington.

From 1994 to 2003 he worked in the administration of Governor Howard Dean in a number of positions including Secretary of Transportation. From 2003 to 2005 he was City Manager in St Albans.

He enjoys time fishing and boating on Lake Champlain and lays golf Searles and his wife Elizabeth are the parents and grandparents of two and live in Burlington. He says he enjoys his work and is "not anticipating retirement anytime soon."
